The northern lights were totally amazing. We got super-lucky and saw green, blue, red and purples! The Arctic Science course leader has not managed to see reds before so we felt very privileged.

I do have to warn, you will probably have seen many amazing photographs of the aurora over the internet, from extremely good cameras, which usually take 20-30 second exposures, to maximise the amount of light gathered from the aurora into the photograph. However, we are limited to the human eye, which just sees the amount of light at any instant in time, so the real life view is a lot weaker than the best photographs. Provided the aurora are powerful enough though you can see all the colours, which we did, and the atmosphere of being in the Arctic Circle and with a great crowd of scientists from around Europe (anyone who has studied Physics A-level is eligible for the course) we had a fantastic time.
